A Pipelined Turbo Receiver for MU-MIMO Communication Systems

Abstract

The MU-MIMO (multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output) communications can enhance the capacity of mobile communication channels. This paper considers the uplink MU-MIMO transmission systems. We jointly design the multiuser detection, turbo equalization and channel estimation for the considered systems. Our proposed system is with low computational complexity. Existing methods can’t meet the requirements of practical implementation. Pipelined receiver can reduce latency and improve throughput, thus pipelined receiver is a good choice for implementation. For the very-large-scale integration (VLSI) hardware implementation, the pipelined architecture can be used to separate the equalizer and decoder into several sub-blocks. The processing time can be shortened and the throughput of system can be increased. The proposed iterative receiver is pipelined structure. The proposed method improves the accuracy of the channel impulse response estimation and the multiuser detection (MUD).

Ye-Shun Shen received the PhD degree in communication engineering from the National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, in 2004. From 1993 to 2005, he has been with Chunghwa Telecom, where he was a senior engineer. Since August 2005 he has been with the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, National Formosa University, Huwei Township, Yunlin county, Taiwan. Fang-Biau Ueng

Fang-Biau Ueng received the PhD degree in electronic engineering from the National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan in 1995. From 1996 to 2001 he was with National Space Program Office (NSPO) of Taiwan as an associate researcher. From 2001 to 2002 he was with Siemens Telecommunication Systems Limited (STSL), Taipei, Taiwan, where he was involved in the design of mobile communication systems. Since February 2002 he has been with the department of Electrical Engineering, National Chung-Hsing University, Taichung, Taiwan. Kuan-Hung Wu

Kuan-Hung Wu was born in Changhua, Yuanlin, Taiwan, on January 1990. He received the BS degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Changhua University of Education (NCUE), Changhua, Taiwan, in 2012, and MS degree in communication engineering from the National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), Taichung, Taiwan, in 2014. He was a member of the Electronic Communication Systems Laboratory, NCHU. He is currently fulfilling his mandatory military service. His research interests include long term evolution (LTE), multiple antenna communications, turbo equalization, multiuser detection, channel estimation and space-frequency signal processing.
