Analysis of Compressed Foetal Phono-Cardio-Graphy (PCG) Signals with Discrete Cosine Transform and Discrete Wavelet Transform

ABSTRACT

In the present era, precise medical instruments are available to record the medical signals for diagnosis as well as regular monitoring of pregnant lady and foetus. These recorded signals are then transmitted to the medical expert as radio signals for clinical advice. The recorded signal if transmitted without any modification, it may consume a lot of memory space and bandwidth. To address this problem, a tunable compression technique has been implemented for Foetal Phonocardiography (PCG) signal using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The results show that the overall increase in compression ratio was 16.2% and 19.4%, by varying the user-defined percentage root mean square difference (UPRD) value from 0.5 to 2.0 for DCT and DWT, respectively. The performance of DWT was better as compared to DCT for Foetal PCG signals in terms of high spatial resolution in DWT.

Sandeep Gupta received his bachelor and master degrees in electronics and communication engineering in 2001 and 2007, respectively. He received his PhD from GKU, Talwandi Sabo (PB). Presently, he is working as assistant professor at CoEM, Punjabi University Neighbourhood Campus Rampura Phul. His research interests include wireless communication and MANETs. He is lifetime member of professional bodies ISTE and Punjab Academy of Sciences.

Manjeet Singh Patterh

Manjeet Singh Patterh received his bachelor's degree from the Madhav Institute of Technology and Science (MITS), Gwalior, MP, India and master's degree from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, both in electronics engineering. He received his PhD degree from the Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. He has 60 publications in international, national refereed journals and conferences. He is having over 23 years of teaching experience. He is currently working as a professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Punjabi University, Patiala.
