A Wideband High-power Low-loss Power Divider Using Half-height Pin Gap Waveguide Technology

Abstract

In this paper, for the first time, a wideband low -loss high-power equally splitting power divider based on the new half-height pin form is introduced with bandwidth from 10 to 13.5 GHz centered at 11.75 GHz. Also, for the first time, a wideband transition from coaxial line to half-height pin gap waveguide with no need of any matching sections with excellent results at the band of (10:20 GHz) was achieved. The proposed transition shows excellent return loss which is lower than 30 dB (measured) at the transition bandwidth center frequency which is (15 GHz) with 0.2 dB (measured) insertion loss and return loss lower than 20 dB (measured) with 0.55 dB insertion loss at the rest of the bandwidth. The proposed transition and power divider designs were validated using circuit and 3D full-wave simulations and confirmed using experimental measurements with all agreements. The power divider has simple manufacturing due to the new pin form; hence, it is suitable for low-cost mass production of high-power mm-wave power dividers.

Ahmed F. Elshafey

Ahmed F Elshafey received the BSc and MSc degrees, with grade of very good with honors, in electrical engineering from the Electronic Engineering Department, Military Technical College, Cairo, Egypt, in 2014 and 2020. He has been with Military Technical College since 2015 where he is now an assistant lecturer in Electronic Engineering Department. His research focused on different metamaterial applications in the area of passive high-power microwave components and millimeter bands. Mahmoud A. Abdalla

Mahmoud A Abdalla was born in 1973. He received the BSc degree, with grade of excellent with honors, in electrical engineering from the Electrical Engineering Department, Military Technical College, Cairo, Egypt, in 1995. He was awarded the MSc degree in electrical engineering from Military Technical College in 2000, and the PhD degree from microwave and communication group, School of Electrical Engineering, Manchester University, UK, in 2009. He has been with Military Technical College since 1996 where he is a professor and leading the electromagnetic waves group in Electronic Engineering Department. Also, he is a visiting professor in Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada, since 2017 His research focused on different metamaterial applications in microwave and millimeter bands specially microwave components, miniaturized multiband antennas, and ferrite components. Also, his research includes electromagnetic energy harvesting systems, EBG components, adaptive antenna systems for DOA estimation and interference cancellations, and radar absorber designs. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. Abdalla is currently an IEEE senior member, URSI senior member, and a member of the IEEE and the European Microwave Association EuMA. He is an editor member and reviewer in many electromagnetic journals such as IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters, IEEE Transaction in Magnetics, Progress in Electromagnetic Research, European Physical Journal – Applied Physics, Journal of Electromagnetic Waves (JEMW), Advanced Electromagnetic, and International Journal of Microwave and Wireless Technologies. Mahmoud was the recipient of Egyptian encouragement state prize for engineering sciences in 2014. Also, he was awarded the top 1% Publon worldwide reviewer award for 2018 and 2019.
