Abstract
As an important issue in today's wider European debate, higher education can contribute to the construction of a more powerful and united Europe. The author of this article emphasises the direction in which the European academic community needs to head in order for it to genuinely contribute to the building of a knowledge society, namely: integration of higher education using its by‐products – in‐depth education reforms and external dimension; empowering the citizen as protagonist of change; finding a new balance between the university's visibility/attractiveness and cultural/intellectual mission; and, continuation of either scientific or humanistic studies through scholarship.
