Summary
In this paper a survey is given of some problems that face the investigation in the field of child language. An attempt is made to assess the prerequisites a child must possess to acquire a language. The child's acquisition of the mother tongue is then followed through the different stages of its development. Ample examples, mainly from English, are given of the child's linguistic competence. A few remarks are also made about the influence of parents and other adults on the rate of development in the child's language.
