Critical evaluation of the application of filter-assisted separation in analytical atomic spectrometry

Abstract

Membrane technology has been broadly used in environmental and biological fields due to the advantages of low cost, short time, and simple operation. It can be utilized to separate metal ions, small molecules, nanomaterials, and biomolecules. In recent years, many efforts have been made to expand atomic spectrometry (AS) based on filter-assisted separation. This article reviews recent advances in filter membranes including cellulose-based membranes, octadecyl silica membranes, and liquid membranes assisted separation combined with AS. The applications of the filter-assisted procedure in AS were classified and reviewed, including the detection of trace metal ions, nanomaterials, and biomolecules. We also discuss the future perspectives of filter membrane separation by combining AS.
