This special issue consists of five review papers drawn from an Applied Spectroscopy Reviews (ASR) meeting organized with the aim of incorporating new editorial board members from Central and Eastern Europe and was an integral part of the 4th National Conference of the Hungarian Chemical Society (https://mkenk2023.mke.org.hu/) between July 10th and 12th, 2023, in Eger, Hungary. The Eszterházy Károly Catholic University hosted the ASR meeting and the 4th National Conference of the Hungarian Chemical Society. Briefly, the number of participants of the 4th National Conference of the Hungarian Society was 150, 10 plenary presentations, 6 keynote lectures and 22 regular presentations were delivered. In total, 37 posters have been displayed.

The ASR core group consisted of Eva Kočišová (Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic), Ursula Fittschen (Clausthal Technical University, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Germany), Stella A. Ordoudi (Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Northern Macedonia, Greece), Joseph Sneddon (ASR Editor-in-Chief), Yong-Ill Lee (ASR Editor for Asia) and Victor G. Mihucz (ASR Editor for Central and Eastern Europe). Except for the presentation of Joseph Sneddon and Victor G. Mihucz scheduled as regular one, all the other presentations of the ASR core group were scheduled as plenary lectures spread uniformly during the three days of the conference to achieve a higher visibility for ASR among the participants of the aforementioned national conference. Three international PhD students, namely Nani Apriyani (Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary), Alžbeta Kuižová (Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic) and Marta Keller (University of Insubria, Como, Italy) joined the core group with poster presentations. Moreover, Alessandro D’Ulivo from Institute of Chemistry of Organometallic Compounds, CNR, Pisa, Italy, as the 2020 awardee of the Tibor Török Medal was a joint invited guest of ASR and the Hungarian Spectrochemical Society.

During the conference, an ASR Editorial Board meeting with the potential new members led by Joseph Sneddon has been held in the conference meeting room of the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University. During this meeting, professor Sneddon explained the aims and scope of ASR and presented the requirements from the new editorial board members.
