The year 2016 was an important one for the Canadian Water Resources Journal, with the publication of two special issues in addition to an issue of regular journal contributions. The first special issue was a double issue (vol. 41, issue 1–2) discussing floods in Canada, edited by Donald Burn, Daniel Caissie, Daniel Peters, Steven Renzetti, Andre St-Hilaire and Paul Whitfield. The second special issue appeared later in 2016 (vol. 41, issue 4) and focused on groundwater–surface water interactions in Canada, edited by Marie Larocque and Stefan Broda. The co-editors express their gratitude to the guest editors of these issues, as well as to Diana Allen (the journal’s former co-editor), for all of their hard work in bringing them to successful completion. We are grateful as always to the Canadian Water Resources Journal’s editorial board (listed on the Canadian Water Resources Association webpage), both for their efforts in overseeing the reviews of manuscripts during the past year and for their forthcoming work in 2017. We also thank the many reviewers (listed at the back of this issue) for their contributions to the journal in the past year.

As many of our readers are aware, the journal’s website (http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/tcwr20/current, hosted by our publisher Taylor & Francis) presents accepted papers that have been published online as well as past papers published in the journal. We encourage the journal’s readers to explore the website for current papers of interest as well as the most-read and most-cited papers published in the journal. One measure of the continued success of the Canadian Water Resources Journal is the 48% increase in the number of papers downloaded from the website in 2015 relative to the preceding year (68,288 downloads in 2015 vs. 46,140 downloads in 2014). We look forward to seeing if this trend continued in 2016.

The year 2017 will see an upcoming special issue that will present a series of papers dealing with groundwater resources in Quebec. Special issues of this type provide an excellent showcase for the outstanding research that is being carried out on a range of issues related to Canada’s water resources. We continue to encourage readers of the journal to suggest topics for special issues that they feel may be of interest to its readership.
