The impact of leisure-time walking on coastal areas: Innovations, transformations, and territories

Abstract

While hiking in the mountains has been the subject of several studies, pedestrian activities on the coast have been little investigated. The aim of this special issue is to fill this gap by bringing together works that question the development of these pedestrian leisure activities on the coasts. It reveals the deeper changes that are taking place in the relationship to the body, to free time and vacations, and to nature, as well as territorial transformations. It is based on several levers that will contribute to the massification of these practices. The studies in this special issue identify three major interdependent issues: socio-economic, political and socio-cultural.

Si la randonnée en montagne a fait l’objet de plusieurs recherches, les activités pédestres pratiquées sur les littoraux ont été peu investiguées. C’est l’objectif de ce numéro spécial de combler ce manque en réunissant des travaux qui interrogent le développement de ces loisirs pédestres sur les littoraux. Il est un révélateur des changements plus profonds qui s’opèrent dans le rapport aux corps, aux temps libres et aux vacances, à la nature tout autant que des transformations territoriales. Il repose sur plusieurs leviers qui vont contribuer à massifier ces pratiques. Les études qui composent ce numéro spécial permettent d’identifier trois enjeux majeurs interdépendants : socio-économique, politique et socio-culturel.
