Satellite observations of labrador current undulations

Abstract

Analysis of visual images of the offshore ice margin of the Labrador Coast, taken on four consecutive days from the NOAA‐5 satellite, reveals horizontal oscillations with a mean wavelength of 75 km and amplitude of 15 km. The oscillations travel downstream, with the Labrador Current, at a speed C ≈ 0.2 m s‐1. Oscillations of similar periods are seen in moored current meter records. An examination of available models of baro tropic and baro‐clinic instability shows that the latter mechanism could account for the generation of the observed oscillations from the shear in the Labrador Current.

L'analyse des images dans le visible de la lisière de glace de la côte du Labrador, prises au cours de quatre jours consécutifs par le satellite NOAA‐5, révèle des oscillations horizontales ayant une longueur d'onde moyenne de 75 km et une amplitude de 15 km. Les oscillations se propagent en aval, avec le courant du Labrador, à une vitesse C ≈0.2 m s‐1. Des oscillations de périodes comparables sont détectées à partir des relevés des moulinets hydrométriques mouillés. L'examen des modèles disponibles de l'instabilité barotrope et barocline révèle que ce dernier mécanisme expliquerait la source des oscillations observées à partir du cisaillement dans le courant du Labrador.
