Undulations of the Nova Scotia current

Abstract

Analysis of infrared images of a surface temperature front off Nova Scotia, taken over a two‐week period, reveals horizontal oscillations with a mean wavelength of 50 km and comparable amplitudes. The oscillations travel downstream with the Nova Scotia Current at a rate of 0.06 m s−1. A comparison is made with a simple model of baroclinic instability, and it is possible that this mechanism could cause the oscillations. However, more definite tests and data are required. These oscillations could contribute significantly to the exchange of water between the inner and outer shelves.

Résumé

L'analyse des images infrarouges d'un front de température de surface au large de la Nouvelle‐Écosse, prises pendant une période de deux semaines, révèle la présence d'oscillations horizontales de longueur d'onde moyenne de 50 km et d'amplitudes comparables. Les oscillations se propagent vers l'aval avec le courant de la Nouvelle‐Ecosse à une vitesse de 0,06 m s−1. Les données sont comparées à un modèle simple d'instabilité barocline et il est possible que ce phénomène soit la cause des oscillations. Cependant, l'étude requiert des données et des essais plus précis. Ces oscillations pourraient jouer un rôle important dans les échanges d'eau entre les parties intérieure et extérieure de la plate‐forme.
