DLF Metadata Assessment Working Group

https://dlfmetadataassessment.github.io/about/

Digital metadata strategies for libraries, archives, and museums are constantly evolving as publications, surveys, and technological tools constantly evolve. To determine the appropriate handling of metadata, archivists, catalogers, and others coming across materials that contain metadata may consult the Digital Library Federation (DLF) Assessment Interest (AIG) Metadata Working Group (also known as the DLF Metadata Assessment Working Group) website. To understand the digital metadata techniques as well as to learn about the DLF Metadata Assessment Working Group, users can select the appropriate tab on the DLF Metadata Assessment Working Group website: About, Projects, Take Part, Contributors, or Resources.

The About tab explains the mission, current efforts, prior efforts, and project limitations of the years long efforts of the DLF Metadata Assessment Working Group. This information is not only helpful for archivists, catalogers, and others considering joining the DLF Metadata Assessment Working Group, but is also useful in understanding how the DLF Metadata Assessment Group’s efforts may help them maintain and create their digital metadata collections.

The Contributors tab contains a listing of leadership and current and past members of the DLF Metadata Assessment Group. Users can see who contributed to the DLF Metadata Assessment Group over the years, but they can also get a sense of the subgroups within the DLF Metadata Assessment Group, such as Blogs, depending on their interests.

The Take Part tab offers information on how to join the DLF Metadata Assessment Group as well as what projects the DLF Metadata Assessment Group is currently undertaking. Archivists, catalogers, and others can have a voice in developing digital metadata tools and publications.

In addition to getting a sense of the workings of the DLF Metadata Assessment Group through the About, Contributors, and Take Part tabs, the DLF Metadata Assessment Group website also contains tabs about current and past metadata projects on the Projects tab. This tab also provides information about other tools pertaining to digital metadata, such as publications, in the Resources tab.

The Projects tab is very useful as small archives and libraries, e.g., historical societies, oftentimes do not know the current literature, framework, etc. pertaining to digital metadata. This tab informs them of the current literature, framework, etc. which they can hopefully incorporate into their digital collection(s). The Resources tab is very handy as small archives and libraries often do not know how to approach metadata assessment of their collection(s).

In summation, the DLF Metadata Assessment Group website is an extremely helpful website for archivists, catalogers, and others wishing to apply digital metadata to their collections or simply learn about digital metadata. Therefore, the DLF Metadata Assessment Group website is highly recommended.
