Abstract
This study explored the influence of training on the development of intentionality in mental health counseling trainees. The purpose was to determine if students at the internship level of training would demonstrate qualitative differences in their use of intentions during and upon reflecting on counseling sessions than would pre-internship students. The findings suggest that students both at the internship and pre-internship levels may not demonstrate intentionality for approximately one-quarter of a counseling session. Consequently, the need for a stage model of counselor intentionality that can build upon current conceptualizations of intentionality to better inform training, post-graduate field supervision, and future research is discussed.
