The last issue for this year in Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly (ATQ) features diverse topics that explore the themes of gender, individual self-esteem and responsibility as well as social dynamics in alcohol and substance use disorder treatment and recovery.

As more studies emerge on group work to enhance the experience of the participants and improve treatment and recovery outcomes, Sugarman and colleagues report a pilot study on gender-specific group therapy for substance use disorders (SUD) focusing on male-related issues that report high satisfaction. Kurtz explores the responses of young women to Alcoholics Anonymous, particularly about finding one’s place in the AA experience that is historically male dominated.

The following articles address individual factors that are crucial to treatment and recovery. Ashford and colleagues analyze the issue of stigma and discrimination in a pilot study that finds lower measures of functional outcomes like recovery capital and self-esteem among individuals who perceive themselves stigmatized, and suggests that engaging in recovery-related advocacy may foster a positive impact on them. Johansson and co-authors explore relationships and emotional regulation in therapy and recommend assessment and support for individuals exploring their defenses. Christiansen and others, in their follow-up article from the last issue on moral responsibility and control, present an interpretative phenomenological analysis in terms of moral responsibility, choice, and self-direction in dealing with alcohol use disorder.

Finally, for the perspective piece, Lee and colleagues present a holistic model of SUD treatment as an alternative to the predominant medical model which considers social dynamics among adolescents that need to be addressed to improve treatment outcomes.
