The first issue for 2020 Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly (ATQ) features a prominent theme of the impact of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups. In the opening article, Ippolito explores the practice, perception and spiritual nature of anonymity in AA. The perception of AA dynamics and its effect on new member sponsorship is analyzed by O’Sickey and colleagues. Vandivier asks the question, “What is the lived-experience of the AA Fellowship in relation to spiritual awakening for members of AA with long-term sobriety?”. Tonigan and team take a look at the importance and outcomes of urban American Indian participation in mainstream or culturally-based AA meetings.

Few studies have investigated the effect of group dynamics on outcomes for first-time DUI offenders. Cruz et al report an in-depth comparison in cognitive behavioral therapy or usual treatment settings. A feasibility study of an in-person session plus follow-up mobile messaging intervention for reduction of heavy drinking and risky sexual behavior in men who have sex with men is described by Chavez and colleagues. SBIRT training has been shown to be highly effective. Calleja et al now report positive outcomes across several diverse health-related disciplines. A dynamic model with policy and treatment design implications is suggested by Jason and colleagues who illustrate how social embeddedness, stress and self-efficacy impact quality of life in recovery homes. Edwards and Gallagher review the book, Sober Curious, in which Ruby Warrington, the author, details a paradigm shift in how recovery is conceptualized, often from her personal perspective. They recommend the book with some cautions.

We look forward to another year of ATQ articles with the anticipation of helping individuals with alcohol and other substance use disorders, their families, and treatment providers. Comments and suggestions from our readers are always welcome.
