Literature contributions of manuscripts published in volume 42( 7-9) of health care for women international

Due to space limitations, in lieu of a substantive editorial, I present only a table of literature contributions that have been provided by the authors of articles published in this collection of work about cancer, published as Volume 42(7-9). As always, read and learn!

Sexual minority women are vulnerable to cancer due to low rates of clinical exams and self-screening, especially those of male gender role identification. Experiencing Adnexal mass or ovarian cancer diagnosis	Buse Güler and Samiye Mete	Theoretical Contribution: Phenomenological study largely descriptive with little new theory. Researchers learned women rely on social support of family and friends rather than from professionals.	Results limited to few women in one hospital in Turkey. Authors suggest professional support is helpful, but a practice contribution requires data demonstrating implementing professional support is helpful. Such data are needed globally.	Turkey
Cervical cancer screening	Teluleko Nhlonipho Maseko, et al.	Theoretical Contribution: Researchers reviewed published literature (2009-2017) and employed Rosenstock’s health belief model to explain cancer screening behavior among women in Africa. Methodological Contribution: Research exemplar showing how a literature review may be performed to generate new understanding of existing data.	Literature review findings confined to Africa, but authors discuss literature elsewhere; furthermore, study can be expanded globally.	Africa
Cervical cancer screening	Heidi Luft, et al.	Theoretical Contribution: Researchers reviewed published literature and employed Social Ecological Model to explain personal, interpersonal, and social structural barriers and facilitators to cervical cancer screening among US refugees. Methodological Contribution: Research exemplar may be read to understand how a literature review may be performed to generate new understanding of existing data.	Literature has been reviewed to apply the social ecological model explaining barriers and facilitators to cervical cancer screening among refugees in the United States. Researchers note “findings are most applicable to countries in the global North who receive refugees that ascribe to non-Christian religions.” Of course, the study with its methods and theoretical findings should be replicated elsewhere. Breast cancer screening	Ilknur Özkan and Seçil Taylan	Theoretical Contribution: Personal barriers to screening include fear, embarrassment, knowledge, beliefs, SES, & negative experiences; culture and stigma are social barriers while health insurance coverage, accessibility of health care services, and attitudes of health care workers are system barriers. Methodological Contribution: Researchers reviewed published literature of qualitative research to provide a meta synthesis of breast screening behavior of women in 22 different countries.	Researchers in Turkey reviewed global literature. Editor concurs with authors claim that when health care professionals understand the differences and similarities regarding barriers identified that better national and international strategies to increase participation in breast cancer screening may be developed. Practice contributions will require developing and testing such interventions.	Turkey
Palliative care for metastatic breast cancer	Sigrunn Drageset, et al.	Methodological Contribution: Researchers reviewed published literature on quality of life among patients receiving palliative care for metastatic breast cancer.	Researchers located in Norway reviewed global literature. Theoretically they summarized findings already in the literature. Methodological contribution is the revelation that in 45 years of research and practice there is no agreed upon definition of what constitutes palliative care. Without a common definition, the meaning of international comparisons is compromised.	Norway
Breast cancer psychological impact	Maria Luisa Martino, et al.	Theoretical Contribution: Authors characterized their research into three trajectories: clinical psychological risks, feminine specific concerns, and resources between individual and relational aspects (finding resources) at various stages. Methodological Contribution: Researchers reviewed published literature on psychological impact of breast cancer among women below 50 years old, synthesizing existing global literature.	Researchers located in Italy reviewed global literature. They identified and synthesized existing literature on psychological impact of breast cancer. While they did not generate new theory, they did suggest three trajectories for understanding the needs of women under fifty, thus approximating threshold for publication as a literature review. Adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer	Yonglan Kim, et al.	Theoretical Contribution: Patient beliefs about necessity of treatment and adverse consequences of treatment are significantly associated with adherence to AET in Korean patients with breast cancer.	Researchers suggest an intervention be designed so that patients understand benefits are greater than risks, but they did not design or test such an intervention.	South Korea
Breast cancer communication	Duduzile Zwane	Theoretical Contribution: Contribution: Hospital communication is incongruent with patient needs because not designed for patients who are economically disadvantaged, mostly illiterate, geographically secluded and fluent only in native Zulu.	That cultural makes a difference is already in global literature. Nevertheless, authors remind us of this through their illustration of differences and impact on disadvantaged cancer patients in South Africa.	Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa
Cervical Cancer	Slobodan Janković, et al.	Methodological Contribution: Authors developed and validated an instrument to measure quality of life of patients living with cervical cancer in developing countries.	Research population limited to the Balkans; however the questionnaire may be an addition to existing measures of the quality of life in patients with cervical cancer elsewhere.	Serbia
Breast Cancer detection among women with orthopedic disabilities.	Medine Tatar and Fatma Ersin	Theoretical Contribution: Study results on barriers to screening are comparable to published research on barriers to screening among a non-orthopedically disabled population, but reasons participants give for not getting screened differ somewhat. The disabled women noted lack of information and being asymptomatic as reasons for non-screening.	Study participants were in Turkey, but study may be replicated elsewhere.	Turkey
QoL for Cancer family caregivers	Jinsun Lim, et al.	Theoretical Contribution: Leisure is difficult for caregivers, however when they overcome the guilt it improves their QoL	Findings are limited only to participants of this study, however the potential exists for a global theoretical and an eventual practice contribution	South Korea
