The Effectiveness of Art Therapy for Teaching Social Skills to Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Pages 176-182 | Published online: 07 Nov 2017

Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research study was to evaluate the effectiveness of art therapy for teaching social skills to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The program we tested was structured to provide a therapeutic setting for children to discuss difficulties they experience in their social interactions, and give them opportunities to develop a better understanding of appropriate ways to respond in social situations. Art therapy methods in a group setting were designed to help them develop and rehearse social skills and positive social interactions with same-aged peers who shared similar experiences. Findings revealed that art therapy enhanced the ability of children with ASD to engage and assert themselves in their social interactions, while reducing hyperactivity and inattention.
