Survey of school speech and language service provision to students with severe communication impairments in Nebraska

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to collect information from speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working in school settings on the issues of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) service provision, SLP perceived competence in AAC, and SLP professional development in AAC. Surveys were distributed to all of the school SLPs in Nebraska, and 54.2% of the surveys were completed and returned. The typical respondent to this survey was a fulltime SLP with primary clinical responsibilities who had earned a master's degree. Approximately half of the SLPs who responded reported that they provided services to students who used AAC. The average number of AAC users per SLP caseload was 5.8 students. On average, each AAC student received 61 minutes of services per week. Perceived competence of SLPs across a variety of AAC student groups is reported. Professional development experiences and needs are summarized.
