Education: Disruption of studies “I’ve had to take a couple of incompletes, because I had a whole month where I wasn’t really doing anything and I was just really upset. It was too hard for me to catch up on all that work.” Age 21, Still enrolled in school; chronic mental and physical health issues impact her ability to attend class; has changed her major “After my assault, I found myself participating in a lot of dangerous behaviors. I was very depressed, a lot of acting out, a lot of drinking and partying… I changed my degree from chemistry to exercise science and then after treatment and getting better, I switched back to biochemistry and got back on track from where I originally was.” Age 24, Still enrolled in school (one year behind); currently applying to graduate programs in health care field Education: Academic challenges “I just really struggled keeping my grades up, just keeping it all together until I got help, and then I changed my major. So I guess it was, you know, the quintessential fork in the road, where I had to figure out do I keep going to college?” Age 37, Transferred schools following the assault; switched major from chemistry to communications “So my grades went way below. I usually am an A student, but, in some of my classes I went as far below as a D. I had to talk to my professors one-on-one saying like, this is the situation I’m in, and I’m sorry that I couldn’t…be a more active contributor to class, but…Thankfully some professors were understanding, but it was still very, very terrible grades.” Age 25, Completed her degree; currently enrolled in graduate school. Education: Academic focus as a coping mechanism “So I ended up doing a double major, and I had incredible PTSD. I wasn’t able to form relationships with people who reminded me of the sexual assault, so in that sense I buckled down and I became an incredibly focused student, because I kind of avoided all trigger areas…That meant that I was studying on Saturday nights, and Friday nights, and Sundays…I needed to be very, very good at something, and that felt kind of important for me in kind of avoiding my own stuff.” Age 33, Graduated with two majors and three minors; completed Master’s degree, yet still feels she has lost educational opportunities because of the assault. “During fall of my sophomore year I actually got on the Dean’s list….I think I was really able to heal through studying and heal through schoolwork. So that’s when I think it started to get more normal and get better.” Age 22, Still in school and wants to pursue a Master’s in counseling; reports assault had an impact on her career choice. Career: Perceived underachievement “When I graduated school, I actually ended up, you know, I worked for non-profits and stuff, which had nothing to do with my degree for a couple years.” Age 26, Pursued justice system, perpetrator was acquitted; school officials told her to take time off or leave school; graduated on schedule. “I wasn’t feeling up to taking on more responsibility …I got a call back about this job and that was the only one I got a callback for, and at first I was like, “Oh my god, I don’t know if I can handle this.” Age 35, Assaulted during first two years of college, graduated with education degree. Career: Workforce performance “In the past couple months I’ve been thinking about the event anniversary reoccurring, so this entire month I have shown up to work like two hours late or more or just not gone at all…supervisors have noticed I’ve been a lot more absent than usual.” Age 25, Currently enrolled in graduate school. “I had left school and I had quit my job like a little bit before that… and then after going to therapy for a little bit and, just kind of getting back on track, then I started working at the same place in that November…I guess I just feel like I’m kind of stuck, and I really can’t move forward until I go back to school.” Age 22, Assaulted twice during sophomore year; changed major after assault and then left school; working retail job and hoping to return to school to finish her degree. Career: Environment limitations “I get really uncomfortable in situations where I am alone with men. If I’m working at the bookstore and guys come in I am a lot more aware of them than I used to be and definitely feel more uncomfortable around them, both ones that I know and strangers but more so strangers, I think. Age 21, Changed majors from English to Psychology because her classes felt unimportant; still enrolled in school. “I know that there was a while when I was afraid to be alone at work, which kind of put a strain on my boss because he always had to make sure that there was…or he did his best to make sure there was someone in there with me.” Age 21, Ex-boyfriend (perpetrator) transferred to her school after they broke up; she is still enrolled but has considering dropping out of school Health: Physical health “I broke my arm during the assault… I think maybe I missed a couple days [of class]. I think that people are a lot more willing to help out with a broken bone than mental health stuff.” Age 29, Her college had no support for survivors; had to miss classes; currently enrolled in graduate program. “I had a chronic pain condition for almost two and a half [years]…I would have a lot of joint pain. They couldn’t physically find anything wrong with me.” Age 24, Switched majors twice; currently applying to graduate school. Health: Mental health “I did finally end up finding a job, but I was suffering such deep depression during that whole period that I felt like it was really limiting me in finding a different job.” Age 31, Underemployed for 7 years; borrowing money from her mother to support herself. “My PTS symptoms were very, very severe, and I was having a tremendous time functioning in crowds, trouble sleeping, I was having nightmares, I was experiencing kind of walking daymares, I wasn’t able to be touched…” Age 33, Assaulted during freshman year; completed a master’s degree Health: Reproductive health “I received several STDs from the perpetrator which has had long-term effects…which I always obviously have to disclose to any partner.” Age 27, Substance abuse issues in college; took an extra year and a half to complete her undergraduate degree. “I've been raped and they gave me [genital] herpes.” Age 31, Sexually assaulted during study abroad trip her senior year of college.
