In Search of Naunny's History: Reproducing Gender Ideology in Family Stories

Pages 88-118 | Published online: 11 Nov 2010

Abstract

Several scholars have argued that family stories play an important role in shaping our understanding of gender in the family. In this article, I examine how my own family members framed stories that my grandmother told them about our family history in ways that reinforce and reproduce patriarchy. Although the specific characters in these stories were members of my unique family history, the stories themselves are similar in form to the stories of many family histories.
