Freud and narcissism: Developing links for inclusion of the ‘object’

Abstract

The problematic of narcissism in the way Freud visualized forces us to acknowledge the dualism of drives inside the subject; the object relations theory then builds up on the inherent need and the structuring potential of the object. The paper traces the growth of this concept in Freud's thinking in a bid to show how the object's otherness is not fully metabolized within the Freudian corpus. On the other hand, recent criticisms of object relations theory point to the perfunctory role ascribed to Freud's most radical discovery of the dualism of drives. Winnicott, Laplanche and Green have all developed theories that have provided pertinent rejoinders to the problematic of narcissism and object relations. The paper discusses how deconstructing and “going back over Freud” helps us to redefine object relations and give the drive functioning due importance. Hence the main thesis of the paper – that of narcissism – reveals the decentered subject's tussle with itself and with the alienness emanating from the object's otherness. If used creatively, ideas such as “otherness”, “objectalizing function” and Green's conceptualization of the clinical significance of negative and positive narcissism then seek to enrich the theorization on narcissism.

Die Problematik des Narzissmus in der Weise, in der Freud sie sah, zwingt uns, den Dualismus von Trieben innerhalb des Subjekts anzuerkennen. Dann baut die Objekt-Beziehungstheorie auf dem inhärent Bedürfnis und dem strukturierenden Potential des Objekts auf. Die Arbeit verfolgt das Wachstum dieses Konzepts bei Freud, um zu zeigen, wie das Anderssein des Objekts innerhalb des Freudianischen Korpus nicht gänzlich umgewandelt wurde. Andererseits weisen neuere Kritiken der Objekt-Beziehungs Theorie auf die oberflächliche Rolle hin , mit der Freud die äußerst radikale Entdeckung des Dualismus der Triebe versah. Winnicott, Laplanche und Green haben alle Theorien entwickelt, die angemessene Erwiderungen auf die Problematik des Narzißmus and Objekt-Beziehungen bringen. Diese Arbeit diskutiert, wie Dekonstruktion und “zurück über Freud gehen” uns hilft, Objekt-Beziehungen neu zu definieren, wobei dem Funktionieren der Triebe gebührende Bedeutung gegeben wird. Daher die Hauptthese dieser Arbeit- die Thematik des Narzißmus zeigt den Kampf des dezentrierten Subjekts mit sich selbst und mit der Fremdheit die aus dem Anderssein des Objekts hervorgeht. Bei einem kreativen Gebrauch versuchen solche Ideen wie wie “Anderssein”, “objektualisierende Funktion” und Greens Konzeptualisierung der klinischen Bedeutung von negativem und positivem Narzißmus das Theoretisieren über den Narzißmus zu bereichern.

La problematica del narcisismo tal como la vió Freud nos obligó a reconocer el dualismo de las pulsiones dentro del sujeto, entonces las teorias de las relaciones de objeto estaban desarrolladas sobre la necesidad inherente y la estructuración potencial del objeto. Este trabajo rastrea el crecimiento de este concepto en Freud en una oferta para mostrar como la “alteridad” del objeto no se halla metabolizado dentro del corpus freudiano. Por otro lado, recientes criticas de las teorias de relaciones de objeto señalan el rol superficial atribuido al descubrimiento más radical del dualismo de las pulsiones. Winnicott, Laplanche y Green han desarrollado teorias que han dado respuestas al problema del narcisismo y de las relaciones de objeto. El trabajo discute como la deconstrucción y la “vuelta a Freud” ayudan a redefinir las relaciones de objeto donde el funcionamiento pulsional debe darse dado su importancia. Desde aqui la tesis principal del trabajo-la tematica del narcisismo revela la descentración de la lucha del sujeto con él mismo y con la alienación procedente de la alteridad del otro. Si usamos creativamente, ideas como “alteridad”, “función objetalizante” y la conceptualización de Green de la significación clinica del narcisismo negativo y positivo, entonces enriqueceremos la teorización sobre el narcisismo.

The paper does not attempt to provide a commentary of the object relations perspective or to trace its historical development. The focus here is limited to questions of understanding why an object is needed, whether Freud talks of object relations in his works and what the workings of an object relationship are.
