“The primary process”: The vicissitude of a concept

Abstract

During the first twenty years that Freud spent creating his theory, he assumed that most of the functions responsible for creating mental-thought structures were organized according to two different forms or principles of thought. He called these forms “primary process” and “secondary process”. The “secondary process” is identified with rational thinking and the ego, and it is easy to follow the changes that this concept underwent in the works of Freud that followed. The concept of “primary process”, on the other hand, disappeared from his later works with no explanation. This article traces the changes that the “primary process” underwent in Freud's thinking and examines the connection between his analytical technique and his research method. A close study of the changes that the “primary process” underwent reveals that Freud's developmental thought process included concepts whose directional changes may be termed “regressive”.

Während der ersten 20 Jahre, in denen Freud seine Theorie geschaffen hat, nahm er an, daß die meisten Funktionen, die für die Erzeugung mentaler-Denk Strukturen verantwortlich sind, nach zwei verschiedenen Formen oder Prinzipien des Denkens organisiert sind. Er nannte diese Formen “Primär-Prozesse” und “Sekundär-Prozesse”. Der “Sekundär-Prozess” ist identisch mit dem rationalen Denken und dem Ich und man kann leicht den Änderungen dieses Konzepts in den weiteren Arbeiten von Freud folgen. Das Konzept “Primär-Prozesse” andererseits verschwand aus seinen späteren Arbeiten ohne Erklärung. Dieser Artikel geht den Änderungen nach, die der “Primär-Prozess” in Freuds Denken durchmachte und untersucht die Verbindung zwischen seiner analytischen Technik und seiner Forschungs- Methode. Eine nähere Untersuchung der Änderungen, welche der “Primär-Prozess” erfuhr, zeigt, daß Freuds Entwicklung des Denk-Prozesses Konzepte einschloß, deren Richtungs-Änderungen mit dem Ausdruck “regressiv” belegt werden kann. Die Implikationen und Einflüsse dieser Wandlungen auf die Klinik und klinische Forschung sind noch heute evident.

Durante los primeros 20 años en los que Freud creó su teoría, asumió que la mayoría de las funciones de confianza para crear estructuras mentales de pensamiento estaban organizadas de dos formas diferentes o principios de pensamiento. Le llamó a estas formas “proceso primario” y “proceso secundario”. El proceso secundario es identificado con el pensamiento racional y el Yo, y resulta fácil de seguir los cambios que este concepto sufría en los trabajos de Freud. El concepto de “proceso primario” por otro lado desaparece desde sus últimos trabajos sin explicación.

Este articulo rastrea los cambios que el “proceso primario”sufría en el pensamiento freudiano y examina la conexión entre su técnica analítica y su método de investigación. Un estudio cerrado de cambios en el proceso primario , revela que el proceso de pensamiento de desarrollo incluye conceptos cuyos cambios direccionales pueden ser llamados “regresivo”. Las implicaciones e influencia de estos cambios sobre la investigación clínica es hoy evidente.

Freud's ability to formulate and conceptualize lies at the centre of this, so that even when the content or the meaning of the concept changes, the formulation may, in many cases, remain unchanged. For example, after he had placed the Oedipal Complex at the centre of the child's development and mental pathology, the claim remained that “Hysteria is repudiated perversion”. But this takes on a different meaning. Hysteria, from this point onwards, is no longer a result of the father's repudiated perversion; it is the pathological way in which we cope with infantile sexual wishes that relate to the mother or the father.
