The postmodern re-codification of perversion: On the production of consumer behavior and its libidinal grammar

Abstract

Assuming Erich Fromm′s and Theodore Adorno's criticism about the cultural industry, which turns it into a means of production of consumer behavior, we try to demonstrate here how the grammar of perversion tends to monopolize the forms of pleasure in postmodernity. According to our hypothesis, consumer production re-codifies the primal repression conceived by Freud: that grammar suppresses libidinal satisfaction in the same manner as primal repression does. However, instead of utilizing the unsatisfied libidinal energy in work, such grammar directs the erotic surfeit towards the pleasure of consuming. In this way, it follows the perverse model of satisfaction.
