1 The focus on Melbourne is deliberate, both because of its position as Australia’s leading metropolis by the end of the nineteenth century and because Alison Gyger’s two volumes, cited in the bibliography to chapter 3, give a full account of developments in Sydney (Gyger Citation1990, Citation1999).

Michael Ewans

Michael Ewans is the Conjoint Professor of Drama in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Science at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 2005. His eleven books include four on opera: Janáček's Tragic Operas, Wagner and Aeschylus: the ‘Ring’ and the ‘Oresteia,’ Opera from the Greek: Studies in the Poetics of Appropriation, and Performing Opera: A Practical Guide for Singers and Directors. He has written articles on operas by Adès, Bartók, Berg, Braunfels, Britten, Debussy, Gluck, Janáček, Szymanowski, and Wagner.
