Living in the Space Between: Integrating Art Therapy Techniques in Palliative Care (La vie dans l'entre-deux : intégration des techniques d’art-thérapie dans les soins palliatifs)

Abstract

The use of art therapy techniques within palliative care provides a unique, yet complementary modality to traditional methods. The purpose of this paper is to highlight key learnings of a palliative care counselling psychologist’s experiences of participating in an art therapy course, based on three guiding questions: What is my identity as an artist? What is my relationship with the creative process within a palliative care counselling setting? How can I interface my artist identity with my role as a therapist? Four themes emerged: trusting in the process, capturing first impressions, shifting the focus, and finding meaning in the chaos. Specific art therapy strategies and a therapeutic process for integrating art therapy techniques within this unique counselling setting are presented.

RÉSUMÉ

L'utilisation de techniques d'art-thérapie dans le cadre des soins palliatifs fournit une modalité unique mais complémentaire aux méthodes traditionnelles. Le but de cet article est de mettre en lumière les principales leçons tirées de l’expérience d’un psychologue-conseil en soins palliatifs suite à sa participation à un cours d’art-thérapie, leçons articulées autour de trois questions directrices : Quelle est mon identité en tant qu’artiste ? Quelle est ma relation avec le processus de création dans un contexte de consultation en soins palliatifs ? Comment faire entrecroiser mon identité d'artiste avec mon rôle de thérapeute ? Quatre thèmes ont émergé : avoir confiance dans le processus, bien cerner les premières impressions, réorienter le focus et trouver du sens dans le chaos. Des stratégies spécifiques d’art-thérapie et un processus thérapeutique permettant d’intégrer des techniques d’art-thérapie dans ce cadre de consultation unique sont présentés.
