Abstract

The fine arts museum as a training milieu for art therapists remains innovative and novel. At the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, art therapy interns develop foundational clinical skills while mobilizing the reach of the museum collection. Artwork encountered in the galleries and exhibitions may elicit unforeseeable responses from art therapy participants and can impact the therapeutic alliance formed with art therapists and trainees. Exploration of the museum collection may inspire reflections on the developing identity of the art therapy trainee and serve as a valuable tool in the supervision relationship. The fine arts museum has become a venue for a variety of populations to be served including those impacted by trauma and major life transitions.
