Abstract

The “Running the U.S. Economy” competition has been held for the last 2 years for high school students in Macon County, Illinois. The competition was sponsored by the local Junior Achievement office with financial support from area businesses. Using a sophisticated macroeconomic simulation model, 11 five-member student teams tried to improve real GDP growth, keep inflation and unemployment low, and maintain a balanced budget. Comments from the students and teachers involved have been extremely positive. Problems and suggestions for improvement in the competition are addressed.
