Soap opera viewing in college: A naturalistic inquiry

Pages 275-293 | Accepted 01 Dec 1984, Published online: 18 May 2009

Abstract

College students' viewing of a popular soap opera, General Hospital, was studied at campus locations. Naturalistic methods of participant observation and interviewing were employed throughout the 9 month field study. The types of student soap opera fans were described, as well as the uses and gratifications associated with viewing the soap opera. Overall, viewing soap operas was an established aspect of campus life, involving both female and male, undergraduate and graduate students.
