Television news and contentiousness: An exploratory study of visual and verbal content in news about the president

Pages 159-174 | Published online: 18 May 2009

Abstract

This study analyzed contentiousness in nightly television network news stories involving the President. A content analysis examined ten days of nightly network news. Verbal contentiousness was found more prominent than visual contentiousness. The findings indicate that contentiousness may be the orientation of a news story about the President no matter his verbal message. This suggests that contentiousness is added by television news workers.
