Abstract
The frequency and distribution of dysfunction in the stomatognathic system after maxillary osteotomy with anterior-inferior repositioning of the maxilla was studied five to 15 years after the operation. Fourteen patients had unilateral or bilateral lip and cleft palate defects. Examination of the masticatory system included measurements of the range of movement of the mandible, TMJ sounds, luxation and locking, deviation on opening, pain on movement, and palpation of the TMJs and masticatory muscles. A clinical dysfunction index Di according to Helkimo18 was determined, based on the recordings. The dysfunction index showed that 18 patients were listed between I-II (90%); of these, 12 were classified as I and six as II (30%). No one was classified as III. Retruded contact position-interferences were found in seven individuals and nonworking side interferences in six. All were pleased with the outcome of maxillary surgery. Surgical corrections of dentofacial deformities should be used as soon as the limits for orthodontic treatment are passed.
