Abstract
The use of object-oriented (OO) technology in industry continues to grow. Unfortunately, re-training of existing developers has proven to be a slow and difficult process. Thus, industry must look to computer science (CS) and information systems (IS) programs to provide many of the needed OO developers. This study investigates the extent of OO in CS and IS curricula over a four year period of time (1992 to 1996). Results indicate that the extent of OO in CS and IS programs is growing, although IS lags CS programs in both the percentage of programs offering OO and the number of courses offered per program. OO is being integrated with existing courses, such as Analysis and Design, and new courses, such as OO Programming, are being added to the curriculum. Overall, the growth of OO in higher education and the information taught in the courses is keeping pace with industry expectations.
