Purtscher-Like Retinopathy in a Patient with Preeclampsia

&
Pages 217-220 | Published online: 09 Sep 2009

Abstract

Visual disturbances in preeclampsia and eclampsia are common; however, only a small percent of cases develop blindness. A rare cause of reversible blindness is acute cortical blindness, also known as posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome. An even rarer cause of visual disturbance is Purtscher-like retinopathy. Initial vision loss can be moderate or severe, and either reversible or permanent. We present a case of Purtscher-like retinopathy in preeclampsia resulting in permanent vision loss and optic atrophy.
