Abstract
More than 1800 journal articles on subjects associated with computer applications to education (CAE) were identified for the years 1984 and 1985. The reference lists of these articles were examined to identify 55 frequently cited books, articles and reports. These works were then grouped into a taxonomy of 14 topics under four major themes: implementation; research, development and evaluation; learning and human cognition; and values and opinions. Frequently cited works are discussed in terms of their contributions to the CAE literature. Changing characteristics of the CAE literature over time are noted.
