ABSTRACT

The 19th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) was held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in October 2017. Contained in this paper are the abstracts of scientific work presented at the conference.

The 19th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) was held in Abu Dhabi, hosted by the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) National Recovery Center, October 26–29, 2017, with support from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the World Psychiatric Association. This is the first time that ISAM's annual meeting was held in the Gulf region. The focus of the meeting was “New Frontiers,” and a particular emphasis of the program was to examine recent scientific discoveries in the field of addiction as well as challenges facing the Middle East as it confronts the new reality of addiction among youth. The Web-based supplement to this article includes the abstracts presented at the 19th International Society of Addiction Medicine conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Plenary speakers at the conference included Drs. Thomas McLellan, the Treatment Research Institute, USA; Hamad Al-Ghaferi, the National Recovery Centre of the UAE; Vladimir Poznyak, the World Health Organization; Ahmed Okasha, Ain Shams University, Egypt; Keith Humphreys, Stanford University; Susumu Higuchi, Kurihama Medical & Addiction Center, Japan; and Kathleen Brady, Medical University of South Carolina, USA.

ISAM, having expanded in national affiliates and membership, has now undertaken establishing regional committees, with the objectives of promoting communication between the ISAM board and the respective world regions; extending options for recruitment of new affiliate societies and individual members; promoting affiliate societies and individual members for more active roles in ISAM; and broadening the reach of the Society for promoting research. In addition to co-sponsoring the journal Substance Abuse, the Society has published an international textbook and has developed position papers on topics of importance to the addiction field internationally.
