Marcus Accioly

Marcus Morais Accioly (born 1943) is a leading poet from the Northeastern state of Pernambuco. He has published twelve volumes of poetry, as well as some chapbooks of measured folk verse (literatura de cordel). His keen interest in that form and other popular sources (especially poet-singers known as cantadores or violeiros) is patent in the title of his first collection: Cancioneiro (1968; Songbook). He distinguished himself in essay with his Poética–pré-manifesto ou anteprojeto do realismo-épico (1977; Poetics–Pre-Manifesto or Draft of Epic-Realism). His magnum opus, Latinoamérica (2001), comprises an extensive neo-epic concerning the whole history of Latin America.

The selection below corresponds to strophes 22, 28, and 30 (of 40) in a rubric entitled “Sertão-sertões” (Backland/s) in Nordestinados (Rio de Janeiro: José Olympio, 1972), the author's second book. The title is a neologism that blends the words nordestinos (Northeasterners) and destino/destinados (destiny/destined).
