Luzilá Gonçalves Ferreira

Luzilá Gonçalves is the author of eight novels and several books on women’s history. She lives in Recife and writes a weekly column for the Diário de Pernambuco.

The crónica (chronicle) is a uniquely Brazilian form of personalistic journalism that shares characteristics with the short story and poetry. It is used to present a “slice of life,” be it historical, personal, or imaginary. Theme and content can range from current events to humorous anecdote. These two crónicas by Luzilá Gonçalves offer a poignant personal reflection on the effects of the drought on the Pernambucan Northeast.

The poem that follows, by Antonio Frederico Castro-Alves, was published as a coda to the chronicles preceding it.
