Salgado Maranhão

Salgado Maranhão (1953) was born in the tiny village of Canabrava das Moças, in the municipality of Caxias in the interior of Maranhão. He grew up working in the fields, with no schooling. At age 15 he moved to Teresina and learned to read and write, later going to Rio to become a poet. He is the author of 11 books of poetry and lyrics to over 500 popular songs, including “Caminhos do sol,” which became the theme song for a famous telenovela.

His poems are influenced by the chants of pilgrims who came through his home state of Maranhão singing or reciting their highly rhymed and rhythmic verses. Winner of many literary honors in Brazil, his work has appeared in numerous magazines in the US, where two bilingual collections of poetry have also been published: Blood of the Sun (2012) and Tiger Fur (2015). The following poems are from Cor da palavra (2010), and originally appeared in Punhos da serpente (1989).
