Rachel de Queiroz
Rachel de Queiroz (1910–2003) was the first woman to be admitted to the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Born in Fortaleza, capital of the Northeastern state of Ceará, she was a major figure of the Northeastern regionalist literature. She offers a deep understanding of the sertão in confronting Brazilian sociopolitical issues of the first half of the twentieth century, particularly the plight of women in a male-dominated society.
The short story “Isabel” dramatically illustrates women's conflicts in the context of gender relations in the remote Northeast of Brazil.
