Hélène Cixous (Oran, French Algeria, 1937), a major figure in poststructuralist feminist theory, is a writer, philosopher, and longtime professor at the University of Paris VIII. She has written books on James Joyce, Jacques Derrida, and Clarice Lispector, among many other works, and may be best known for The Laugh of the Medusa (1975), her exploration of women’s writing. As playwright, she has worked for decades with director Ariane Mnouchkine’s Théâtre du Soleil.
