Notes

1 Conceição Evaristo has brought up on various occasions the many obstacles she had faced for years before finally achieving critical recognition. In a 2018 interview, she stated: “Que regras são essas da sociedade brasileira para vermos uma mulher virar um expoente no campo da literatura só aos 71 anos? . . . . É preciso questionar essas regras e dinâmicas sociais, culturais e econômicas que tornam tudo muito mais difícil para as pessoas negras” (What rules are these in Brazilian society that a woman only becomes an outstanding figure in the field of literature at the age of 71? . . . We have to question those social, cultural, and economic rules and dynamics that make everything much more difficult for Black people) (Interview with Júlia Dias Carneiro. http://www.bbc.com/portuguese/brasil-43324948. Accessed on 18 April 2018).
