ABSTRACT
The two Middle Albian index ammonoid species Hamites (Hamites) attenuatus and Hamites (Hamites) rectus are recorded for the first time from the Karai Formation in the Ariyalur Sub-basin of the Cauvery Basin. The part of succession under the present endeavour has yielded eight ammonoid specimens from four ammonoid levels which are systematically described in the Cauvery Basin. Biostratigraphic evaluation of these ammonoids enables the authors to formulate Hamites (Hamites) attenuatus Zone which is broadly correlatable to the Hoplites dentatus Zone – Euhoplites lautus Zone interval of the standard ammonoid zonal scheme.
