On the occasion of the 17th International Symposium on Society and Resource Management (ISSRM) held in Madison, Wisconsin, June 2011, a special symposium celebrating the career and contributions of Donald R. Field, Jr., was convened. Several of his students and colleagues bore witness in oral presentations and discussion. This brief essay is derived from one of those presentations.
