Effect of hydrostatic pressure on corrosion behaviour of 5086 Al-alloy in sea water

Abstract

The hydrostatic pressure effect on the corrosion behaviour of 5086 Al-alloy in sea water after some heat treatments has been studied. By increasing the hydrostatic pressure, the average corrosion rate of the alloy decreases whereas its susceptibility to localized attacks increases. Mean corrodibility decrease is due to cathodic process inhibition, linked to corrosion layer composition.
