An ultra-wideband microstrip-to-slotline transition

Abstract

An ultra-wideband microstrip-to-slotline transition is studied and examined in this paper. The developed transition employs two linear tapered transformations to implement field rotation and impedance matching between the two transmission lines. The transition structure, analyzed with the field matching and impedance matching theories, is simple and compact. Considering the junction discontinuities, the circuit parameters are further optimized with full-wave electromagnetic simulations. The optimally designed circuit in a back-to-back configuration is experimentally validated. The tested data show a reasonable agreement between simulations and measurements. Meanwhile, a general index that can characterize the comprehensive performance of a transition circuit, called figure of merit (FOM), is proposed. The developed transition features a high FOM as compared with some published results.
