Switchable frequency selective surfaces absorber/reflector for wideband applications

Abstract

A wideband switchable frequency selective surfaces (FSS) absorber/reflector for C-band (4–8 GHz) application of smart stealth system is presented. This switchable FSS has novel properties that combine wideband absorption and switchable performance over the entire operational band. Nested treble split-rings are used to accomplish wideband and switchable performance of normal incidence. The split-rings are coupled together to create broadband resonance based on effect of superimposed resonance. By switching connected state of above split using PIN diodes in the outmost ring, we are able to control the working state of FSS. In OFF state, the switchable FSS works as a wideband absorber. The −9 dB bandwidth is 3.2 GHz (4.1–7.3 GHz). In ON state, the switchable FSS has fine reflective property. The average reflectivity is −2.8 dB in the operational band. The switchable FSS is computed by full-wave numerical simulation. The samples are fabricated and tested to verify the proposed concept. The experimental result is found to be consistent with computed result.
