ABSTRACT
This paper presents a simplified composite right/left-handed trans-mission-line (SCRLH-TL) unit-cell, which is primarily consisted of a rectangular ring with two grounded vias. Superposing this unit-cell onto a high–low–high step-impedance resonator (SIR) leads to a novel SCRLH-TL multiple-mode resonator (SCRLH-TL MMR). By combining the SCRLH-TL MMR with a cross-shaped defected ground structure (DGS) and using a broadside coupling approach with two lumped capacitors, a highly compact and ultra-wideband bandpass filter was carefully designed and fully investigated. The filter was fabricated by using a conventional PCB process with the substrate of FR4. The measured 3-dB passband ranges from 2.55 through 11.75 GHz with the fractional bandwidth (FBW) of about 129%. The filter exhibits a high selectivity with steep skirt property, and has a wide upper stopband. Its total dimension, including the rectangular substrate with feed lines, occupies only 13.5 mm × 6.0 mm, which is found with the smallest size in comparison to those recently published in the literature.

Shuhui Yang
Shuhui Yang received the BS degree from the Zhejiang University (ZU), Hangzhou, China, in 1994, the MS degree from the Communication University of China (CUC), Beijing, China, in 2000, and the PhD degree from the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS), Beijing, China, in 2003. He continued his research as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the University of South Carolina (USC) from 2013 to 2014.
In 2003, he joined the Beijing Information and Science Technology University (BISTU) as a Lecturer and became a Professor in 2012. In 2015, he joined the CUC, where he is currently a Professor with the Department of Communication Engineering.
Dr Yang has been the senior member of the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE) and the member of the IEEE. He has authored or coauthored over 90 international journal and conference papers. He has been a reviewer of the IEEE Transactions on Communications, Journal of Semiconductors, etc.
Yinchao Chen
Yinchao Chen received his PhD in Electrical Engineering at University of South Carolina. Since then, he has worked with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU), and University of South Carolina (USC), respectively. He is one of co-authors or editors for three (3) academic books and (10) book chapters in electrical engineering, and has published more than two hundreds (200) academic papers in international journals and conference proceedings. His current research interests include signal integrity for high speed circuits, RF and integrated microwave circuits, and integrated microstrip antennas.
Chenyin Yu
Chenyin Yu received the BS degree from the Communication University of China (CUC), Beijing, China, in 2017. She is currently a Master Degree Candidate with the Department of Communication Engineering in CUC.
Guizhen Lu
Guizhen Lu received the BS degree from Beijing University of Science and Technology, China, in 1982, the MS degree from Peking University, China, in 1985, and the PhD degree from BeiHang University, China, in 2002.
He joined the Information School in Communication University of China as Lecturer in 1985. From 1998 to present, he has been Professor with the Department of Communication Engineering.
Dr Lu has been the senior member of the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE). He has authored or coauthored over 200 international journal and conference papers.
Bin Li
Bin Li received the BS and PhD degrees from the Northern Jiaotong University, Beijing, China, in 2001 and 2007, respectively. Since 2008, she has been Lecturer with the Information Engineering School in Communication University of China.
Ling Wang
Ling Wang received the BS and MS degrees from the JiangHan Petroleum University, Shashi, China, in 1997 and 2000, respectively, and the PhD degree from the Beijing Institution of University, Beijing, China, in 2004.
She joined the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering in the Communication University of China (CUC) as Lecturer in 2004. From 2011 to present, she has been Associate Professor with the Department of Communication Engineering.
Dongdong Zeng
Dongdong Zeng received the BS and MS degrees from Beijing Broadcasting Institute in 1995 and 2003, respectively, and the PhD degree from the Communication University of China (CUC). She has been Associate Professor with the Department of Communication Engineering in the CUC since 2011.
