60 GHZ center fed slot array MMW antenna using hybrid standing and traveling waves

ABSTRACT

A slot array substrate integrated waveguide antenna is proposed by utilizing novel center inclined slots with non-uniform spaces for imparting feeding advantages of standing and traveling waves. This 1 × 8 array antenna introduces a 13.2 dB gain at center frequency of 59.9 GHz with −10 dB return loss from 58.9 GHz to 60.9 GHz (roughly 2 GHz) and cross-polarization levels more than 45 and 20 dB in E and H planes, respectively. The occupied volume of the antenna is 33 × 4.5 × 0.8 mm3 that shows its compactness. The analyses have been performed by two full-wave numerical electromagnetic simulator packages, namely ANSYS HFSS and CST MWS which the former collaborated with finite element method and the latter with finite integration technique. The simulation results show good coincidences between these two methods and it validates the design of proposed structure.

M. Norooz Oliaei (Member, IEEE) was born in Dubai, UAE, on 1988. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), and Electrical and Computer Science Engineering from K. N. Toosi University of Technology (KNTU), Tehran, Iran, in 2011 and 2013, respectively. His research interests are about Millimeter and Sub-millimeter (THz) Wave Antennas, Photonics, Plasmonics, and Quantum fields, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Metamaterials, Microwave Devices, Radar Systems and Networking. He also has served as reviewer and TPC member for different ISI journals and conferences, so far: The IET MAP, The ACES, IET Electronics Letters, IEEE AWPL, IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine, PIER, Frequenz, EuCAP, ISMICT, ICWITS, and etc. He has worked at industries on Telecom. - MW & Access Transmission, MVO Optimization - like Huawei Tech. Co. He is going toward to get his PhD in biomedical engineering at K. N. Toosi University of Technology (KNTU).

M. Karami

M. Karami was born in Hamedan, Iran on April 29, 1985. He received the M.Sc. degree of electrical and computer science engineering from K. N. Toosi University of Technology (KNTU), Tehran, Iran in 2013. He is going toward to get his PhD at Semnan University, Iran.

M. S. Abrishamian

M. S. Abrishamian (Member, IEEE) received the B.S. degree from the High Institute of Telecommunication, Tehran, Iran, in 1970, the M.S. degree from Northrop University, Inglewood, CA, USA, in 1978, and the Ph.D. degree from Bradford University, Bradford, UK, in 1996, all in electrical engineering. For the past 30 years, he has been a Faculty Member with the K. N. Toosi University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, where he is currently a Professor. His research interests are penetration and scattering of electromagnetic (EM) waves, Periodicity in Electromagnetic (Photonic, Plasmonic, Frequency Selective Surface (FSS), Double Negative Materials (DNG)) and computational electromagnetics.

R. A. Sadeghzadeh

R. A. Sadeghzadeh received the B.Sc. degree in telecommunication engineering from K. N. Toosi University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 1984, the M.Sc. in digital communication engineering from the University of Bradford, UK, and University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), Manchester, UK, as a joint program in 1987, and the Ph.D. degree in electromagnetic and antenna from the University of Bradford in 1991. Currently he is working as a professor with the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, K. N. Toosi University of Technology.
