FDTD and wave matrix simulation of adjustable DBS-band waveguide polarizer

Abstract

This article presents the results of numerical simulation and optimization of electromagnetic characteristics of a new waveguide polarizer design containing a conducting diaphragm and pins. The theoretical model of a waveguide polarizer with one diaphragm and four pins is developed and applied for the optimization. The main electromagnetic characteristics of the polarizer were obtained based on the elements of general scattering matrix of the designed device. In order to check the performance of the developed mathematical model it was simulated in a software using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique. The proposed design of a waveguide polarizer has the ability of fine tuning of its characteristics by mechanical change of the heights of applied pins. Developed theoretical approach and obtained numerical results can be used to develop new tunable waveguide polarizers and filters with diaphragms and pins.

Andrew Bulashenko

Andrew Bulashenko received a MSc Diploma from the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” in 2006. He became a full university Senior Lecturer in 2010. He is currently teaching a course in electrical circuit theory and is actively involved in the developments of microwave polarization processing devices. He has more than 80 publications in various journals and conferences.

Stepan Piltyay

Stepan Piltyay received a MSc Diploma from the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” in 2011. In 2018 he received a PhD degree in antennas and microwave appliances. His current position is Associate Professor at the Department of Radio Engineering. In 2021 Dr Piltyay won “Young Scientist of the Year” award from the Council of Young Scientists of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. His main research interests are development and optimization of microwave polarizers, orthomode transducers, waveguide devices and antennas. He is an author and co-author of more than 100 publications in various journals and conferences.

Ivan Dikhtyaruk

Ivan Dikhtyaruk graduated from Kyiv Technical College of Electronic Devices and entered the Faculty of Radio Engineering of National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” in 2019. He studies at the Department of Radio Engineering. His areas of interests are telecommunication networks and microwave devices.

Oleksandr Bulashenko

Oleksander Bulashenko entered the Electromechanical Department of Ivan Kozhedub Professional College of Sumy State University in 2020. His areas of interests are passive microwave devices and satellite systems.
