It is now well-recognized that there is inequity in vision loss and eye disease between men and women. While the main reason for the differences in most of the world is inequity in use of eye care services, biologic factors and differential mortality rates also contribute. Research on gender issues in eye disease generally focus on the excess risk that women face; however there are some conditions in which men have a slightly higher age-specific incidence. There is a growing body of evidence on the biologic differences in eye disease between men and women, but relatively little research on the extra barriers that women face to use eye care services (particularly in developing countries). In both settings there is still a paucity of information on interventions to ameliorate the excess burden of eye conditions women face. Similarly, there is still limited evidence for strategies that improve uptake of eye care services by women. There are a number of research and programme initiatives currently underway that are focused on gender and eye care; publication of these could help inform policy makers, researchers, and those responsible for eye care programme development. To this end, Ophthalmic Epidemiology will have a focal issue on gender and eye care.
We invite authors to submit articles for consideration in this special issue of Ophthalmic Epidemiology, planned for print with a target of late 2017. All submitted articles are subject to the peer-review process as usual, and only articles that pass peer-review will be accepted for publication.
