Characterization of the solution concentration variation in microstructure by phase imaging

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a method for characterizing solution concentration variation based on quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is proposed with advantages of visualization, non-invasiveness and high speed. Through the phase imaging system, the full-field phase shift of the solution to the reference sample is obtained, and the sampling points are determined by taking the modulus squared of the phase gradient. Phase imaging experiments based on CaCl2 solutions are implemented to verify the feasibility of this method. The experimental results demonstrate that the optical phase distribution can be used to characterize the region of concentration change conveniently. The concentration-phase function is substituted into the simulated neuronal dynamics model Chay, then the optical phase information is successfully applied to describe the bursting pattern of a neuron in simulation, which indicates a good application prospect in the fields of industry and biology.
